Get Out There! 3 Common Business Start Up Roadblocks

jump-inI talk about initiative, bravery and getting out of your comfort zone quite a bit on this blog.

Why?  Because these are necessary components to becoming a Tiny and Mighty business.

I speak with many tiny business owners and I find that there is only one difference between those that are succesful and those that could be successful –

The courage to GET OUT THERE!

It is surprising to me how many people have a great idea — but they are not acting on it.  Or, they are putting the products or services together but they are not MARKETING or actively SELLING these products or services.

In other words, they are not GETTING OUT THERE!

I have been thinking about what must be overcome to GET OUT THERE and I have found that there are three broad “business start-up roadblocks.”

They are Shy -  Does this apply to you? — be honest.  What will people think of my ideas, products, services, marketing, etc.

After all, GETTING OUT THERE requires you to attract attention to yourself, your creations, your passions.

This can be embarrassing for some — you don’t think I caught some crap from my friends and family about the video in the upper right hand corner of this blog?  — I sure did.

I don’t care — I want to GET OUT THERE and I want to get my ideas, products and services out there too.

You can overcome your shyness — just put your ideas out there and hold your head up high!

They are Scared -  Fear.  It drives many of our decisions.  Marketing yourself online requires you to learn some new things — new technologies, new etiquette, a new mindset, etc.

The key to overcoming fear is BABY STEPS.  Don’t get overwhelmed with the avalanche of different opportunities and technologies available online.  START A BLOG!  Start writing about your business, your industry, etc and use WordPress to run that blog.  There is nothing to fear inside of WordPress — I promise — if you can type in Microsoft Word you can use WordPress — that’s why I love it.

I also love it because it will allow you to “ramp up” to any level you wish in the future — WordPress can handle anything and everything in the online marketing space.

They are Indecisive -  Paralysis by over analysis.  It could be keeping you from getting your dream Tiny & Mighty business off the ground!  You might be the sort of person that will research and research and research — but never pull the trigger.

Execute.

You certainly must be well prepared and create a plan but at some point you must take action if your business is to become a reality.

What other reasons do you see that are holding people back from getting out there and making it happen?

People usually yell at me, “Get out of here!”

That’s not what you meant, but it does get me moving!

    Great post.

Again, you hit the hot button for getting the process going.

    Go BIG or go home!

  2. I know you aren’t shy, scared or indecisive Fred! You are a good example of someone that is routinely getting out of their comfort zone and trying new things.

I had to laugh at this post. Russ, you have a gift for encouragement and bringing out a “can do” attitude. After listening to you speak, I went from… “nope, I don’t want to get a blog until I think I have something to say, after all I don’t want to attract attention to myself…to ” I’m going to go home tonight and start a blog and start posting right away”. If you have a product, book, service, whatever that you want other people to be interested in, you have to attract attention to yourself.
